The Mosquito Bowl Trailer: Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård Star in Netflix War Film

The film is directed by Peter Berg.

Netflix has released the trailer for The Mosquito Bowl, a new war film directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor). Starring Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe), Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu), Ray Nicholson (Smile 2) and Tom Francis (Sunset Boulevard), the film follows four college football stars who leave their athletic careers behind to fight in World War II.

Based on a true story, the film combines historical drama, sports and action to portray young athletes’ transformation into Marines as they face the brutal realities of combat in the Pacific. The production is inspired by The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, a book by journalist and author Buzz Bissinger, a Pulitzer Prize winner.

The trailer introduces John McLaughry (Nicholas Galitzine), Bob Bauman (Bill Skarsgård), Tony Butkovich (Ray Nicholson) and David Schreiner (Tom Francis), college football players who decide to enlist in the United States Marine Corps following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

The preview follows the protagonists as they leave football stadiums behind for military training camps and, eventually, the devastated landscapes of war. Featuring explosions, combat sequences and tense moments, the trailer highlights the contrast between the characters’ youth and the brutality of their battlefield experiences.

What Is The Mosquito Bowl About?

The story takes place during World War II, when four of the top college football players in the United States put their athletic fame aside to serve in the armed forces.

As they prepare for the invasion of Okinawa, the protagonists take part in a legendary football game featuring some of the sport’s greatest talents of the era. Played against the backdrop of war, the game takes on a tragic significance: for many of those involved, it would be the last game of their lives.

The title refers to the historic sporting event associated with the island of Guadalcanal. More than a story about football, the film explores the bonds of friendship and camaraderie forged among the servicemen, as well as the human cost of war.

According to Peter Berg, the production aims to honor the Marines who lost their lives in combat during 1944 and 1945. The director has also emphasized the film’s goal of bringing audiences closer to the experiences of the real-life figures, highlighting the gap between youthful dreams and the harsh realities of war.

In addition to the four leads, the cast includes Brent Comer and Dominic Bogart, among others. Peter Berg also appears in the film as General Simon Buckner.

Berg directs and produces the film, with a screenplay co-written by Berg and Mark L. Smith, known for his work on The Revenant. The production also brings together Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner of Imagine Entertainment, in partnership with Film 44.

The film marks another collaboration between Berg and Netflix, following projects such as American Primeval and Painkiller. The director has previously explored the world of sports in Friday Night Lights and military experiences in Lone Survivor, bringing together themes that closely align with the premise of his new film.
